Every year we are forced to
endure the pain that is winter.
Freezing temps, snow, ice,
sleet, and more snow become the
norm. Our Saleens go into
hibernation…
I always find
myself yearning around late
January for the winter to break
so the Saleen can come out of
its winter hibernation in the
garage.
Then at
last-spring arrives, and with
that car show season. My
favorite time of the year is
spring, not too hot yet. Car
shows in weather that doesn’t
bake me, that’s what I’m talking
about.
Then the first car show date for
the 2007 show season finally
arrived. The date: March 31,
2007. The place Huntingburg,
IN.
My father-in-law Bill Mattingly
and myself were planning on
hitting this show as a kickoff
to the summer. A few phone
calls and emails later President
Charlie Smith was in too.
Once we got to the show another
local friend of mine Daniel
Fuqua showed up in his n20
Saleen Focus (too cool).
The show ended up being
everything that the club is
about: fun, friendship, and
Saleens. We had a blast just
catching up and trading car
stories throughout the day.
Mother nature did show herself
too, but only in the form of the
Bradford pear tree blossoms.
Those blossoms filled the air at
times like snow. Charlie just
kept the windows up on the SSC,
while Bill and I tried moving
our cars just a bit to try and
escape. Daniel spent the most
time getting the blossoms out of
his car (he keeps his car more
clean than anyone I know, and
that’s a good thing).
In the end it was a great day.
It had been a few years since I
had seen an SSC. Sitting in
Charlie's SSC that day for a
stereo demonstration made me
want an SSC (but my finances say
no).
By the way, don’t let Charlie
fool you into thinking his SSC
isn’t an extra special car in
great shape. Charlie, you are
lucky to own such a ride.
After a few hours of hanging out
we strolled around the rest of
the show.
There were no other Saleens
there, but there was the winning
Mustang from the Speed show
Forza Motorsport Challenge.
I had a blast and I’m looking
forward to the Shelby Spring
Fling in May.
