Tim Yeager's 1987
#65
(More info in the Members Gallery)
My name is
Tim Yeager, and I am from Charleston, SC. I'm a senior at Charleston
Southern University with a major in business management and a minor in
computer information systems. I have been the proud owner of a few
Saleen Mustangs which include: 1996 Saleen S281 Convertible #84, 2001
Saleen S281 SC #677, and now I currently own 1987 #65, a dark metallic
grey hatchback with silver stripes, grey interior, and basketwheels.
For years
I really wanted to own a fox body Saleen, but always went with the newer
cars, and I always had something go wrong with them. I had quite a few
repairs done to both my s281's, which included a heater core and 1
having a blown engine thanks to the plastic plenum on the series 2
supercharger being cracked, and some other odds and ends. I eventually
got fed up with the overly expensive fixes on the modular engines, and
began to hunt down a fox body. For months I looked, and nothing really
caught my eye. I searched Performance Autosport, and every other forum
and classified area on the internet with no luck. After my '01 S281
sold in mid December, I was able to finally make a purchase, and I
stumbled upon an '87 Saleen on cars.com which was located up in Raleigh,
NC.
I
immediately contacted the owner, a nice man who restored cars about the
Saleen and got the scoop. He said, "The car looks good from twenty feet
away, but whoever repainted the car after an accident when the original
owner had it did an awful job. However it still has the original shift
knob, radio, steering wheel, and interior...and its all perfect."
So with
the car only needing paint, I asked his price, which ended up being
$6500, I told him to consider it sold and I’d be up next week to check
it out, and I’d be bringing a check if the car was as described.
A week
later I'm in Raleigh and we pull up to the man's house, and it was
freshly detailed sitting in the driveway, it was gorgeous...from twenty
feet away. After looking the car over and driving it, I was very
impressed. It drove wonderful, the interior and engine bay was
immaculate, and all it did need was some paint. I gave him the check,
threw it on the trailer, and off I went back to Charleston, happy that I
finally had a fox Saleen, and that I got it for a great price.
When I
purchased the car, it had BBK headers, H-Pipe, and Underdrive Pullies
installed. Since I've owned it, there have been quite a few upgrades and
restoration done to it. It had a good amount of body work and fresh
paint, new brake pads, brake lines, tie rods, and brake rotors. I have
also added Maximum Motorsport lower control arms, subframe connectors,
caster/camber plates, and FRPP upper control arms. I have a few minor
things I need to do to really make the car clean which will include new
window switch bezels, new window trim, and fixing the ash tray. I also
am looking to add a panhard bar, and a heads, cam, intake combo to the
mod list down the road when money permits. I couldn’t be happier with
the car, I feel I really got a good deal on the car and have had many
friends give their effort on the weekends to help me restore and mod
this car. I have taken the car to 1 local show and 1 MCA show at South
of the Border and placed very well in both. It is nice to see that the
hard work that has gone into the car is paying off. At the same time I
plan to road race the Saleen in some events, so it also has to have some
"go" to go along with its "show."
I would
also like to add that the members of the SCOA are some of the best
people you can ever meet. I've made many friends all because I owned
cars that I love. Thanks SCOA, and see you all at the Nationals in
Atlanta!
